The Last Resort was started in 1966 as a music venue and over the years hosted many fine music acts. Jimmy Buffet, Doc Watson, Leon Redbone, Steve Goodman, and the Randall Bramlett Band are some of the best known artists to play there. Perhaps the most famous artist to perform at the Last Resort is Steve Martin. One of my favorite Steve Martin performances is featured below.
The club closed down for about a decade before a group of Athens investors, including R.E.M.'s Bill Berry, resurrected The Last Resort as a restaurant. In typical Athens fashion, the new owners preserved the original name and continue to honor its history.
